Whether the ball is in your court is worked out from who sent last, not from a status somebody has to remember to set.

One inbox, not two

An inquiry, a question against an RFQ and a query about a live order are the same thing: a thread between two companies. Splitting them into separate systems gives a supplier two inboxes, and the one they check less is where buyers end up waiting.

Buyers open threads

Suppliers can reply, and cannot start. Unsolicited outreach is what turns a marketplace into a lead-generation list, and buyers are the side that is hard to replace.

The record has to be trustworthy later

Messages cannot be edited or deleted through the API by either side. An altered message in a negotiation is a dispute nobody can settle, and this is a system where the conversation and the purchase order sit next to each other.
